Calcium AKG is a highly dosed calcium alpha-ketoglutarate (Ca-AKG) food supplement.
Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) is a molecule involved in the production of cellular energy and is being studied for its potential ability to slow down the aging process. When combined with calcium, AKG is much more stable and bioavailable.
Calcium AKG is classified in our Longevity category.
Benefits of calcium alpha-ketoglutarate
Definition and role of alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG)
Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) is an organic acid, naturally present in the body, that plays a decisive role in the Krebs cycle, a central metabolic process taking place in the mitochondria.
This cycle is essential for the production of cellular energy (ATP) and the proper functioning of the mitochondria, which are involved in the vitality and longevity of cells.
More specifically, AKG is thought to:
-
activate the AMPK pathway, which promotes cell repair and energy balance;
-
inhibit the mTOR pathway, which limits cell aging by triggering autophagy (cell cleansing and recycling); and
-
reduce age-related inflammation by reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the activation of inflammatory pathways.
Alpha-ketoglutarate levels fall with age
AKG levels fall sharply with age, being up to 10 times lower at 80 than at 40, leading to a reduction in mitochondrial efficiency and oxidative stress.
Numerous animal and human studies suggest that taking AKG orally could extend lifespan and improve overall health as we age (1-4).
The bioavailability and efficacy of AKG taken orally are also considerably increased when it is combined with calcium to form calcium alpha-ketoglutarate.
The 3 strengths of our AKG calcium food supplement
Calcium AKG differs from other AKG food supplements in 3 ways:
-
its bioavailability boosted by calcium: the combination of AKG and calcium results in the formation of a stable salt called calcium alpha-ketoglutarate or calcium alpha-ketoglutarate (Ca-AKG). This combination significantly improves the stability, absorption and efficacy of AKG. Calcium also contributes to energy metabolism by activating enzymes involved in ATP production, to muscle function by triggering fibre contraction and to cell division by regulating the signals required for cell multiplication and specialisation;
-
its powerful, safe dose of AKG: Calcium AKG provides you with no less than 1,000 mg of calcium alpha-ketoglutarate per day, a dose which is both high and safe, corresponding to the quantities used in the most promising scientific studies on cellular metabolism and longevity;
-
its vegan capsules with no controversial ingredients: finally, our dietary supplement is packaged in 100% vegetable capsules made from hypromellose (HPMC) with acacia gum, a natural compound, as the only excipient. It contains no GMOs, nanoparticles, gluten or lactose.
