Soothe Stress Through Exercise!

2016-07-15

Overcoming stress and gaining greater well-being and serenity through physical activity - is it really possible? Yes! Why? How? Here are all the answers.

Sport and stress

Is Stress Always Negative?

In its original form, stress is simply a normal reaction of the body, a biological mechanism that helps adapt to a particular situation. The body secretes adrenaline, a hormone that triggers the typical signs of stress. The problem? When stress becomes overwhelming, takes over daily life, and causes a wide range of symptoms related to sleep, appetite, head comfort, and more. In fact, it is one of the most common reasons for medical consultation.

Why Does Exercise Help with Stress?

Physical activity is a powerful tool for stress and mood support because it helps calm the mind and release tension. Miraculous? Not exactly. Behind this feeling of relief lies a simple biological reaction: the increased production of endorphins stimulated during exercise. Why does it work? Because endorphins counteract the effects of adrenaline. Even better, a U.S. study showed that people who exercise regularly produce less adrenaline and are therefore more resistant to external stress. Endorphins - often called "feel-good hormones" - also reduce the perception of discomfort, which explains the immediate sense of well-being after a workout. Exercise also stimulates the production of the happiness hormone, a neurotransmitter involved in reward mechanisms. Hence an instant mood boost when you work out.

What Benefits Can You Expect?

The benefits of exercise are wide-ranging - both physical and psychological - and directly address the symptoms associated with stress. Physically, exercise can help improve sleep quality, reduce tension-related discomfort (neck, back, etc.), and more. Psychologically, exercise promotes serenity, increases resilience to pressure, improves self-esteem, and contributes to overall emotional well-being.

Are All Sports Equal?

On paper, yes. What matters most is choosing an activity you genuinely enjoy, as the pleasure factor is essential, both for sticking with the activity and for achieving the desired sense of well-being. That said, it can be helpful to choose your activity based on your needs or personality. If you need to release pent-up energy, opt for cardio (soccer, fitness classes, boxing). If you want to clear your mind, outdoor activities are ideal (cycling, running). If your goal is to relieve tension, choose gentle practices such as yoga or Swedish gym.

How Should You Practice?

Make physical activity as accessible and enjoyable as possible. In practical terms, this means prioritizing activities that are close by and at convenient times. The key, of course, is consistency. The ideal rhythm? Sessions of at least 30 minutes, 3 to 5 times a week. You can also mix different types of activities; if they complement each other, even better!
