Liposomal Glutathione is a liquid liposomal glutathione supplement providing 900 mg per measuring cap, the highest dosage on the market.
Offered in its reduced from (the biologically active form), it acts synergistically with the antioxidant vitamin C to protect cells against oxidative stress. It benefits from innovative technology based on liposomal encapsulation which protects it from gastric juices, thus increasing its absorption in the gut.
This supplement is part of our Anti-aging category.
Glutathione is a protein, more specifically, a tripeptide, which is produced by the body from three amino acids: glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine (1).
Dubbed 'king of the antioxidants' by scientists, it is our most powerful endogenous (produced by the body) protective compound.
Ubiquitous in living organisms, it occurs naturally in plants, fungi, and animal cells.
Glutathione is involved in maintaining redox potential in cell cytoplasm. While its oxidized form has a pro-oxidant effect, its reduced form (GSH or L-glutathione) constitutes a first-line defense for cells (2).
Though produced by virtually all the body’s cells including those of the nervous system, it is in the liver where the largest reserve of glutathione is found (3). This invaluable substance thus has remarkable liver-related detoxification properties and is responsible for eliminating many 'xenobiotic' (foreign) toxins. Amongst others, it processes metabolites from tobacco, alcohol, and therapeutic drugs.
In addition, its thiol grouping binds with heavy metal salts (mercury, lead, cadmium...) enabling them to be safely excreted by the body (4).
Glutathione is also a precursor of many detoxifying enzymes, including glutathione peroxidase, responsible for neutralizing waste products from cellular respiration or the process of 'cell death' (apoptosis) (5).
Glutathione is used intravenously in conventional medicine for hemodialysis patients at risk of anemia, metabolic problems (diabetes), and age-related neurodegenerative disorders.
It is also worth noting that glutathione levels decline with age, starting from around the age of 50. Low glutathione levels are often observed in patients with various neurological, visual, and cardiovascular disorders (6-7).
Taken orally, glutathione has inherently low bioavailability as it faces two key obstacles: the strong acidity of gastric juices and the action of a liver enzyme called gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) which catalyzes the first stage of its breakdown (8).
Liposomal glutathione is more effective than other forms as it benefits from innovative encapsulation technology. Here, the glutathione is contained within a casing made from phospholipids, liposomes, which protect it from digestive secretions and ensure it completes its journey to the intestinal barrier in its reduced form (9).
By way of example, scientists studying rats with rheumatoid arthritis demonstrated the superiority of liposomal glutathione over standard glutathione by measuring biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation. They observed a greater reduction in levels of rheumatoid factor, malondialdehyde, and C-reactive protein (10).
SuperSmart's Liposomal Glutathione stands out from other liposomal glutathione supplements in that it offers:
We recommend adults take a daily dose of 1 capful of Liposomal Glutathione (10 ml) diluted in a glass of water or fruit juice. Once opened, the bottle should be kept refrigerated for a maximum of 1 month.
Oxidative stress occurs when the body is no longer able to 'mop up' excess free radicals, pro-oxidant molecules that 'rust' our cells and make them age faster. This process is exacerbated by smoking, pollution, exposure to UV or ionizing radiation, eating fried foods or those cooked at high temperatures, as well as engaging in high-intensity exercise (12).
To restore the right balance, make sure you eat plenty of highly-colored fruits and vegetables (color means high antioxidant content), reduce your exposure to pollutants, get enough sleep, and minimize any source of stress.
If you want to do more to combat oxidative stress, then in addition to the vitamin C in Liposomal Glutathione, you can take vitamin E. This vitamin helps protect cells against oxidative stress by neutralizing free radicals, thus protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage (13). Opt for tocotrienols, a powerful form of vitamin E (try, for example, Annatto Tocotrienols).
The rate at which your body ages is largely dependent on the condition of your DNA. In parallel with your liposomal glutathione supplementation, we would also suggest taking a product rich in DNA-favorable nutrients (such as DNA Repair, which is rich in superoxide dismutase and zinc pidolate, both of which support normal DNA synthesis) (14).
Current studies show that supplementing with liposomal glutathione causes very few side effects – only a handful of cases of intestinal cramps and bloating have been reported.
There is no mention in vivo studies of any notable risk associated with liposomal glutathione supplementation. As a precautionary measure, however, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and anyone suffering from a chronic disease should seek medical advice before starting to supplement with glutathione.
Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. This product is a nutritional supplement and should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity. Keep out of reach of children.
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any medical conditions, consult your healthcare provider before using this product.
